bicycle rack

This is an outdoor bicycle rack that I built with my dad.

Why did I make this?

To free up space for more plants, and so that my mum can no longer use the excuse of ‘not having enough space’ when I tell her to get a bicycle and start cycling for exercise.

And yes, we used to hang our bicycles on bamboo typically used for drying clothes.

How did I make this?

(1) Start with the required height and width to hang the bicycles.

(2) Next, I optimised the space-use by planning the additional drawers and cupboard for the other outdoorsy things that need to be stored.

(3) With the dimensions and a sketch in hand, the CAD and BOM came together with relative ease.

(4) Alu extrusion was ordered to size, fasteners were ordered in bulk, but the wooden panels needed some Tetris work to minimise wastage as the shop charges by the board.

(5) Putting it all together, the structure came up fairly quickly. The wooden panels needed some extra work with a jig saw, sander, paint and varnish.

Wouldn’t it have been easier to just buy a bicycle rack?

Yes, and a lot less fun. And I wouldn’t have had the chance to see firsthand how poorly unprotected PLA performs under unimpressive loading while up against Singapore’s intense UV exposure.

All illustrations and animations are designed by myself unless otherwise stated.
